State of the Union... and Bachman...

I don't know about you but I found the state of the union address to be heartening. People seemed to be getting along and the President made sure that people knew what he was willing to work on which is all good. But (you know you saw that coming) the way he did his speech was a little flat. I could tell at places that he expected some sort of cheering/booing to occur and there was only silence. In all I liked the message and he did have some funny parts but it wasn't up to the high caliber speeches that I'm used to from Obama.  As for the actual things that Obama said he would like to work on I think that it is good that he put healthcare out there. I don't think that we should repeal it but there are things the need to be fixed to make it better.  I must admit that I did disagree with one of the analyst that came on MSNBC ( where I watched it) who said that Obama should have talked about gun control. I totally disagree. If Obama even touched that subject he would have been chewed up and spit out.  He would have also alienated much of the blue dog democrats.  I think that as a whole our gun control policies are fine if not on the higher end of things. I think it is more of cultural shift that we need to make to become more safe instead of a policy shift. But then again, that is my opinion.

On to another speech. Bachman spoke really well and made her crowd enthused but was so very wrong on her historical facts when she gave her speech that was funded by Iowans For Tax Relief.  This is where I groaned. To ignore our history of resisting letting people into our society as equals is appalling! Come on Bachman! Read some history before you pull insane facts out of your ear! AHHH!!!! As a Minnesotan it irritates me that much more because now people are wondering what we are teaching our kids of history if our freaking Representative can't get it right! BAH!

An idea of how to get Congress to work together and get things done:

There are many reasons why Congress is actually pulling together to get things done like repealing DADT and working on START, the fact that the new representatives are going to be coming in soon is an incentive but so is the fact that as soon as they get their shit together they can go home and chill out for the holidays. So my idea is this: we make a new holiday that takes place at the end of every month that allows them to go home and have a vacation (I hope you see where I'm going with this). Now, since they get to bounce out of DC as soon as they are done for a week they will have a reason to get things done. We could even BS them more and say that the rest of us get these holidays off too, though we probably won't.

I guess it is sad that I am so excited that the politicians are actually doing their jobs. Now, if they had been working together more maybe not as many of them would have been "fired" like the rest of us would be if we didn't do our job description... And now I've become apathetic again...

What's this? Movement? It's a sign of the apocalypse!

Ok, maybe not the apocalypse since one of the things that Congress is working on is a treaty with Russia to reduce both of our nuclear bombs and such. This is a good thing but I'm pretty sure that it means we have taken a step back from the "prophesied" apocalypse (which in my opinion is a good thing).

Our senators and house reps. actually acted like grown adults and made a compromise! YAY! A+ for effort. Was it everything that the democrats wanted? Hell no. Did it make the tax breaks permanent like the republicans wanted? Hell no. Was it some where in between? HELL YEAH! It's a start at least. This is something that we need to push our representation to do more, especially since the Senate is owned by the dems and the House by the republicans. Otherwise NOTHING will ever get done in the next two years.

Sad part is that if they do work together, I would prefer the House and Senate to be dominated by different parties. This makes it so no one group is in power and can just run a muck without thinking about the rest of the populace, you know the minority that we oscillate being and not being. It will be interesting if this little love session will last after the New Year when all of that new blood will be pouring into the halls.

Why I am apathetic?

5 Reasons for Apathy:

1. All politicians are out of their mind. It doesn't seem to matter what side of the aisle they are on they are, deep down, insane and out of touch with America. We are a populace that is in the middle but everyone seems to be running to the left and right as far and deep as they can. How am I supposed to choose between to

2. No one seems to want to compromise (thus making it so the senate is in an eternal state of halt). If you do then you are weak and people pick at that one vote until it ruins you. Some how the idea of "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine." is no longer a good trait in politics. If you play that game you are abandoning everything that America stands for. This doesn't make sense! Our system was based on compromise! This forces the majority and the minority to work together to come up with solutions that will take care of everyone's needs. To quote a song, "You can't always get what you want. (...) But you'll get what you need."

3. Who are you and why are you funneling money into my state's political race? Why is it alright for people who aren't even in the state to send money and thus futzing up the dynamic in my state? Why is it alright for them not to tell me who they are? This makes every politician suspect of corruption.

4. Attack ads in general. Why? Most of them have barely in truth in them... So why even put it out there? All this does is annoy me and make me not want to vote for anyone since everyone has something out there attacking their opponents. What is so difficult about putting out what you are actually trying to accomplish by running? Maybe, instead of attack ads, politicians could stick to ads that actually let me know what they are running on. But no, that would actually allow me to make informed decisions without having to do hours and hours of research to find out.

5. Wait... what? When did this become a soap opera? I think that apathy has become a self defense mechanism because the more I pay attention the more I realize that politics is like a soap opera but instead of trying to get me to buy stuff they get to choose if we are at war, if the taxes go up or down, and if we will have enough funding for schools. But since this is a political blog, I will wade through all of the soap opera to try and give you my opinion as one of your fellow bored and apathetic voter compatriots.
